18/ The Forest as Water Pump
This water pump works so well that the downpours in some large areas of the world, such as the Amazon Basin, are almost as heavy thousands of miles inland as they are on the coast.
Land is typically above water level. Also, gravity pushes the water down. At first glance, itâs impossible for forests to get the amount of water they need in a snap. Forests can only obtain water when it rains or the wind is gracious enough to blow the water over land. However, rain does not always fall from the sky and the wind is not always around. But, the surprising thing is that trees seem to do well even without any help from humans to give them water.
Trees offer the largest area covered with leaves. Twenty seven square yards of needles and leaves are spread over the crowns. In each rainfall, part of it gets trapped within the leafy canopy first before it evaporates once again. For every square mile, trees consume water up to 8,500 cubic yards during summer. The water gets released later via transpiration, which leads to the creation of new clouds that get to travel to other areas to release rain. The cycle repeats and even the most remote locations can have water.
There are a few things that must be satisfied for the pump to succeed. There should be a forest near the ocean up to the farthest bend. It is important that coastal forests are present because they will serve as this systemâs foundation. Expect the water pump to fall apart when the coastal forests are cleared or absent. Scientists that conducted a study regarding the said system found the same result: the trees were the always the ones that transfer moisture into other forests.
The clean springs in the forests allow groundwater, which can be found deep down where it remained cold, to bubble to the top. The forest floor practically becomes an enormous sponge that absorbs the rainfall. The trees are careful to let the rainwater gently trickle from their branches to the ground. The loosely packed soil soaks up all the water. Instead of letting the rainwater join into a stream that will simply rush away immediately, the water gets trapped within the soil for future usage. The underground spring also gives immense benefits to other soil dwellers.
The trees also offer significant service to streams, which tend to get extremely warm at one point unlike spring water that is consistently cool. The trees can block the sun for the stream water and prevent it from becoming too warm.
